Backstory:

Boyhood:

His conception was the result of too much alcohol and drugs consumed by a young and reckless pair of on-again off-again lovers. His impending birth was the terrible reason behind their shotgun wedding which even a blind man could see was doomed to failure before it had even started. So it was no surprise, really, that Blaise Hendricks would have a tumultuous and unhealthy upbringing. The most vivid and common memories of his youth featured heated arguments between his parents, which most often ended with the father beating the mother, the mother breaking crockery, the man slamming shut the front door and riding off in a black rage or the woman shutting herself in the bathroom to shoot junk up her vein. One particularly horrifying childhood recollection featured all of the aforementioned events, in addition to the discovery of his mother's lifeless corpse crumbled around the toilet after an overdose. Blaise was eight by then, yet already jaded against there being such a thing as a nice life.
With the birth father sentenced to five years in prison for domestic abuse, the son was taken by the state and placed in foster care. His new and temporary parents tried their best, but they were not prepared or capable of dealing with the young hellion they'd welcomed into their home. Blaise was always up to some mischief or other, getting in trouble at school every other week, given a severe "last warning" by the local authorities every few months, but none of that seemed to faze the youngster. His foster parents soon found out there was only one person who could keep him under control and get him to do anything constructive at all - the foster father's father, a hardened veteran of the Second World War.
Retired Gunnery Sergeant and Drill Instructor of the United States Marine Corps Winston Abercrombie had a natural talent for forging fine soldiers out of shoddy recruits. He used to apply those same skills and his vast experience on his son's foster child whenever he would be brought up to his cabin for visits, which became gradually longer and more frequent the more fruit they proved to bear to the exasperated couple who had taken Blaise in. The boy resented this at first because the old soldier was the only person he feared, but that fear gradually transmuted into respect and eventually even admiration. Over the few short years Blaise knew the sergeant, he had managed to turn him into a decent teenager with a burning desire to serve his country in the military.
Alas, his actual father's imprisonment came to an early conclusion on account of his good behaviour and eloquently and frequently expressed desire to be reintroduced to society and reacquainted with his beloved son, whom he longed to be forgiven by. So soon after his thirteenth birthday, Blaise was taken out of foster care and placed back into the custody of this man whom, it turned out, had not been rehabilitated at all and was just as much a deadbeat dad as ever. Fortunately for the teenager, the ex-convict left him pretty much to his own devices and his unofficial drill instructor had taught him basic survival skills like how to prepare something better than a sandwich to eat. So while his old man fussed over his rare and brand new one-in-a-few-hundred 1984 "Willie G Special" Harley Davidson motorcycle, the son juggled housework, homework and usually also found time to keep up the tough physical training routine Sergeant Abercrombie had introduced to his daily schedule.
Eager as he was to be rid of his legal guardian and start serving his country, Blaise turned up at the local recruitment centre for the Marine Corps the very morning of his eighteenth birthday. Unlike at high school, he would consistently be amongst the top ranking recruits of his unit and graduate from boot camp with flying colours. During the customary ten days of leave graduated recruits got Blaise chose to visit the only person he ever truly saw as a father-figure - the eighty-year-old Winston, who was then suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. He spent those ten days happily helping take care of his mentor and reminiscing on the old days during his bouts of clarity. He'd return to his duties to attend Infantry Training and eventually be assigned to active duty.

Early Adulthood:

Soon after his unit was deployed to Panama where he would get his first taste of combat in Operation Just Cause, however brief it turned out to be. Still, an evil dictator was deposed and Blaise distinguished himself in the fighting enough to earn his first promotion to Private First Class, so it was a win both for the country and the man. Back at base camp on U.S. soil, Blaise worked hard and got involved in a number of activities - most notably boxing which he had a natural talent for he continued to hone during his service. His next encounter with live ammunition would happen about a year after his first, when his unit was sent to Saudi Arabia during the First Gulf War, shortly after his second promotion to Lance Corporal. Operation Desert Storm would turn out to be the bloodier of his experiences despite also being shorter, so much so it was dubbed the "100-hour war". Blaise would even lose a few comrades to friendly fire during this encounter, a fact which troubled him greatly. Upon returning home he refocused his efforts on his career and his training and would soon earn the nickname of "Iron Fist" on account of his powerful left hook. This extended post-war downtime would also mark his promotion to Corporal and the start of his first ever serious romantic interest.
She was a beautiful and smart nurse in the USMC. He a strapping twenty-one-year-old Corporal of the same, with a promising military career ahead of him. They met during a party and it was puppy love at first sight. Blaise would feign a few injuries from training to find an excuse to visit her in the medical ward. Angela would abandon the pack women usually travel in and have eyes and words only for him when they met at the mess hall or the off-base bar. A dozen drinks and "chance encounters" or so later and they were officially dating. These were the happiest days of Blaise's life, which almost made him forget all about his childhood conviction that in life there was only misery and nothing else. There he was with a bright future ahead of him and an ideal life partner to share it with. Alas, all good things come to an end, and this particular end was harsh and came far too swiftly.
About seven months after their first meeting, while out on a date at a dance club favoured by the base dwellers, they both had a few drinks too many in celebration of Angela's recent 21st birthday. Blaise lost sight of her for a few minutes while he went to the bathroom only to come out and not find her where they'd agreed to meet. After a half hour or so spent looking for her in the thick crowd, he ventured up a set of stairs leading to a few rooms known to be for rent at an hourly rate, thinking she might have gotten one of them to surprise him with more celebration. At first glance, there was no sign of Angela upstairs, and all the doors seemed to be closed shut and occupied. On the verge of panic, Blaise resolved to call the police and report her missing, but just as he was about to head back downstairs to the payphone, he distinctly heard her voice yelling, "NO! STOP!"
That was enough to make the soldier in him spring into action. He kicked down the locked door from behind which he'd heard the scream with one swift blow, to find in his shock his girl with her blouse ripped down the middle and a man standing over her, clearly paying her undesired attentions. To make matters worse, the man was known to him, a superior in fact - his least favourite sergeant. Blinded by rage, Blaise attacked the would-be rapist and a brief but heated fist fight ensued. They brawled as the woman screamed for help and for them to stop, but before anyone could stop them, Blaise delivered one of his deadly left hooks which sent the sergeant stumbling back straight out of the nearby third-floor window. The fall killed him on the spot and Blaise was arrested and court-martialed for Voluntary Manslaughter of a superior.
His legal counsel was fairly confident they could beat the case by claiming defence on behalf of the victim who would have been raped. However, he had failed to take into consideration the identity of the particular sergeant who was about to commit the crime. Frank was the son of renowned Horatio Cremonesi, a Lieutenant Colonel of the United States Marines as well as a relative of some members of an Italian mob. Pressure from military bigwigs wanting to avoid the scandal of a rapist officer from an esteemed military family compounded with a couple well-placed threats from mobsters to change the statement of the main witness. Rather than describe how Blaise had saved her from an aggressor, Angela told the story of Blaise the jealous lover who had convinced himself they were exclusive and caught her with another boyfriend of hers, killing him in a fit of rage. The whole courtroom was stunned by the diversion in testimony but none more so than Blaise who found himself dishonourably discharged and sentenced to five years in prison for Voluntary Manslaughter.
As if that was not enough, the corrupt Lieutenant Corporal arranged for him to get regular beatdowns by other prisoners while inside through his mob connections. It was during one such beat down that a strong bond would be formed between Blaise and three other inmates. He'd met these men before and spoken to them only a few times, so when they intervened out of the blue in his defence when five thugs were paid to deliver some pain to Blaise during yard time, he had no idea why they would do such a thing. "Five against one? Odds were too skewed - these men deserve a better showin'!" the ringleader claimed with a bleeding lip and a jerk of his head towards the cheering inmates gathered around the area where the brawlers were being restrained by the prison guards.
